GCSE Geography - What do we study@Baysgarth?

Below is a summary of the content that students study at GCSE. There will be 3 exams in Geography all taken at the end of the 2-Year course and covering physical geography, human geography and geographical applications (which includes a decision making exercise and geographical enquiry).

Students will complete a minimum of 2 field studies. One taking students to Flamborough Head and Hornsea to investigate coastal processes and another to Hull where students will investigate differences within the city.

Paper 1 units

SECTION A: The Challenge of Natural Hazards

  • Understanding Natural Hazards

  • Tectonic Hazards, examples - Nepal earthquake (2015) and Amatrice earthquake (2016)

  • Weather Hazards - examples, Typhoon Haiyan (2013), Somerset Levels Flood (2014).

  • Climate Change

SECTION B: The Living World

  • Understanding ecosystems

  • Tropical Rainforests - Case study the Amazon, Brazil.

  • Hot Deserts - Case study, The Western Desert USA.

SECTION C: Physical Landscapes in the UK

  • Major UK landscapes

  • Coastal Landscapes - examples, Medmerry Coastal Managament / Holderness and Dorset coasts.

  • River Landscapes - examples, The River Jubilee and the River Tees.


Paper 2 units

SECTION A: Urban Challenges

  • Understanding global urbanisation

  • Urban Change in an NEE - Case Study, Lagos

  • Urban Change in the UK - London

SECTION B: The Changing Economic World

  • Changes in global development and reducing the development gap

  • Economic Development in an NEE- Case Study, Nigeria

  • Economic change in the UK

SECTION C: The challenge of resource management

  • Global distributions of food, energy and water.

  • Resource Management in the UK

  • Water Resource Management - examples, China SNWTP and Hitosa, Ethiopia.

Paper 3 units

SECTION A: Decision Making Exercise - Each year a different theme is explored. Students will receive information on this 12 weeks prior to the exam.

SECTION B: Fieldwork and geographical enquiry - Students will complete 2 field studies one exploring evidence of longshore drift along the Holderness Coast and another investigating how the quality of the life varies from the city centre to the suburbs in Hull. Students will have to recall how the investigated each area, what they found out and how they might improve the validity of their own enquiry. They will also need to answer questions on unknown fieldwork.
